Their team uses direct electrical stimulation (DES) to identify how the human brain, particularly the frontal and temporal cortex, responds to varying parameters of stimulation, taking into account amplitude, frequency, and stimulation location, in the hope of uncovering the critical input-output relationships between stimulation parameters and neural responses intracranially. They found brain region-specific response profiles to different combinations of stimulation parameters that were consistent across individuals and within individuals. These profiles could inform both a mechanistic understanding of DES and identified rules in how the brain responds to stimulation for possible therapeutic uses.
